Who Is Covered

Under Title VI of the 1964 Civil Rights Act, public agencies are obligated to provide competent language assistance to limited-English-proficient individuals. This includes:

Government agencies
Hospitals and clinics
Social services
Legal and law enforcement settings
Schools and educational institutions

What to Do If You Are Denied Interpretation

If you or someone you serve is denied interpretation, take these steps:

Politely remind the provider of the obligation to offer language support.
Use a language ID card to indicate your preferred language.
Ask to escalate the issue or request a supervisor.
