Exodus Refugee Immigration is dedicated to the protection of human rights by serving the resettlement needs of refugees and other displaced people fleeing persecution, injustice, and war by welcoming them to Indiana.
Exodus staff need to have two-way oral communication with their clients. Their clients are refugees and asylum seekers at all stages of resettlement. Individuals and families often arrive in the United States with little or no English language skills. Exodus staff and volunteers do not have language skills in every language spoken by their clients. Making up this communication shortfall is critical for the successful resettlement of refugees and asylum seekers.
Not all conversations between Exodus and their clients take place in formal settings with scheduled interactions. Sometimes a quick phone call with a client may be needed without notice. Conversations are needed to assist with all the necessities of life: housing and household goods, clothing, food, work opportunities, legal matters, acculturation, navigating healthcare and education system, etc. Exodus required a flexible and cost-effective way to access interpretation services almost any time anywhere.
LTC provided a self-directed on-demand over-the-phone interpreting (OPI) service accessible 24/7. Without an appointment, without any notice, and within 30 seconds, Exodus representatives could speak with their limited English proficient clients (LEPs) with the aid of an interpreter by phone. Unique PIN access was assigned to every staff member in all levels of the organization, making language barriers virtually non-existent.
With the help of on-demand access to interpreters in any language, Exodus was able to grow in their capacity to serve their clients throughout all stages of the resettlement process. New staff were added each year, departments grew, new departments were created, and a new office location was created in Bloomington, IN. More and more clients of Exodus were able to achieve life-long dreams of security and stability, and they were able to take advantage of opportunities that would never have been available to them without several years of partnership between LTC and Exodus.
